Certain kinds of property pass outside the will by virtue of contractual rights or operation of law, including: / Life insurance death proceeds payable to a named beneficiary (though not if the estate itself is the beneficiary). / Property held in a trust set up by the decedent / Property held in joint names with rights of survivorship in the surviving joint owner(s) / Property held in an IRA or qualified retirement plan with a named beneficiary
